To celebrate Human Rights Week last year’s Human Rights Oration was delivered by author, journalist and screenwriter Benjamin Law on Thursday 13 December.
Passionate about social justice, Benjamin discussed the aftermath of his compelling 2017 Quarterly Essay, Moral Panic 101. He also reflected on the state of human rights in Australia, including the experiences of LGBTI young people, and future directions.
Benjamin’s writing has appeared in Good Weekend, frankie, The Guardian and the Financial Review. Two of his books – The Family Law and Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East – were nominated for Australian Book Industry Awards.
Benjamin has also contributed to a range of television projects, co-writing the award-winning adaption of The Family Law, working as researcher and associate producer on the SBS documentary Deep Water: The Real Story, and taking part in the most recent series of Filthy Rich and Homeless. He also co-hosts ABC RN’s weekly national pop culture show Stop Everything.
