Breaking news or Making News? A forum about media, race and public debates

19 April 2018

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Australian Human Rights Commission are jointly hosting Breaking news or Making News?: A forum about media, race and public debates.

The forum will open a dialogue between media, communities, advocates and researchers on race and multiculturalism. It will seek to understand how the media approach issues concerning race and multiculturalism and provide a platform for community to share experiences of depictions of race within the media.

Confirmed panellists are Alex Lavelle, Editor with The Age; Zione Walker-Nethenda, lawyer and social entrepreneur; Adel Salman, Vice President, Islamic Council Victoria; and Sarah Abo, SBS reporter and presenter.

Through this discussion, the three commissions hope to contribute to a better relationship between media and multicultural communities, and to community harmony and resilience.
