Improved protections of the rights of people with a disability

On 15 September 2009, the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission in conjunction with the Australian Human Rights Commission hosted a seminar on significant developments in the protection of the rights of people with a disability. These include Australia's ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the recent changes to the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).
Graeme Innes, Disability Discrimination Commissioner, Australian Human Rights Commission spoke about the implementation of the UN Convention in Australia and Christine Fougere, Deputy Director, Legal Section, Australian Human Rights Commission presented a paper on the changes to federal disability discrimination legislation. Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke opened the seminar.
