VEOHRC Submission to the Inquiry into the Draft Disability (Access to Premises- Buildings) Standards
The Commission has made a submission to the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee (Parliament of Australia) regarding the Draft Disability (Access to Premises-Buildings) Standards. These standards, developed under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992( DDA) aim to improve access to public buildings for people with disability. Once the Standards are finalised, the Building Code of Australia and relevant Australian Standards will need to be amended to align with the Standards.
In welcoming the Standards as a long overdue and much needed tool for improving the accessibility of public buildings, the submission identifies omissions in the draft standards that we consider need re-consideration. Most notably we argue that apartment blocks should be covered by the Standards. We also identify issues that require clarification so that the law is easy to understandand and in order to promote certainty.
