Practical self-determination: The right(s) approach to addressing the unfinished business

Muriel Bamblett to deliver the 9th Human Rights Oration

In 2000, a march for reconciliation saw 300,000 people take to the streets in Melbourne. Nine years later, and post national apology, reconciliation is still unfinished business. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the right to self-determination is still out of reach, yet it is the most important social determinant of Aboriginal health and wellbeing.

The 2009 Human Rights Oration will examine how only a human rights approach can create a meeting between cultures, establish the basis for practical self-determination, and make ‘closing the gap’ a meaningful reality.

On 8 December, Muriel Bamblett, the CEO of the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, will deliver the ninth Human Rights Oration

The Oration is Commission’s most significant annual event. It marks United Nations Human Rights Day and provides a platform for the discussion of human rights as it applies to the everyday lives of citizens.

The Attorney-General, The Hon Rob Hulls will provide the opening address.

There will also be a special dance performance by the Gunditjmara Karweeyn group.
