New human rights Commissioner to take the lead on eliminating discrimination

29/09/2009

Dr Helen Szoke today accepted her appointment by the Attorney-General as Commissioner of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, in a move that signals the first step in a new era for human rights protection in Victoria.

Dr Szoke has held the position of Chief Conciliator and CEO at the Commission since 2004.

“As Commissioner, I am pleased to be working with four new Board members to build on the Commission’s achievements and create an effective human rights body with a focus on the prevention of discrimination,” said Dr Szoke.

“The new board members come from diverse backgrounds and professions, and will bring fresh insights, innovation and expertise and provide an important link to the broader Victorian community. “

The new board members are:

“While we must ensure people continue to understand and enjoy their rights, the future work of the Commission will also bring a stronger focus on corresponding responsibilities. That is, the responsibilities all of us have to prevent discrimination from occurring in the first place,” said Dr Szoke.

“The elimination of discrimination is necessary because it perpetuates disadvantage for members of our community; robbing them of opportunity for income, education, work, leisure and social connection.”

“The community is very clear that non-discrimination and respect for rights is essential to a liveable community. Our challenge is to create a community that is liveable and fair for all,” she said.

“The re-shaping of the Commission is an important step forward in building on the culture of human rights in Victoria – a place where people are aware of their rights and their responsibilities,” said Dr Szoke.

Dr Helen Szoke is available for interview.
