Have your say on a Human Rights Act for Australia

On December 10 2008, the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Federal Government announced the establishment of a National Human Rights Consultation.

Australia is the only Western democracy that does not have a law enshrining the protection of human rights.

As the citizens of the only State to have a Charter of Human Rights, Victorians can offer a unique perspective on the importance of protecting human rights through a national Act.

The National Human Rights Consultation is your opportunity to have you say about whether there should be such a law.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission supports the introduction of a national Human Rights Charter and is actively involved in the consultation process. To keep up to date with our activities please subscribe to our e-updates service.
