About the Commission. Why choose us?
The Commission has extensive knowledge about discrimination and harassment in Victoria. One of our functions is to handle complaints of discrimination and harassment in Victoria, giving us a unique perspective on the experiences of complainants and respondents. We also understand the implications and costs associated with discrimination and harassment for organisations. Our training and education on equal opportunity, harassment prevention, grievance handling and human rights is up to date, effective and based on current trends in Victorian workplaces.
We work with businesses across all sectors and industries, assisting with the design and implementation of sustainable strategies to prevent discrimination and harassment and to effectively manage complaints.

Please advise us at the time of your enrolment if you have any needs such as interpreters, attendant carers, dietary requirements or alternative formats for materials.
Cancellation information
If you are unable to attend you can transfer your enrolment to someone else. Please let us know so correct certificates of registration can be printed. Where places are available in a later session, we can transfer your registration to a different date at no extra cost.
If you cancel up to seven days before the workshop and do not reschedule, we will refund your registration fee in full. However, non-attendance or cancellation with less than one-week's notice may incur a cancellation fee of up to the full cost of the workshop.

Family Responsibilities and Work - How to make your workplace family-friendly

The rights of injured workers returning to work
Dates:
- Friday 7 August, 1.00pm - 4.30pm
The process of returning to work after illness or injury is an important step towards recovery. However, it can sometimes give rise to real or perceived discrimination.
This workshop will:
- Provide a brief overview of the return to work process
- Explore how to negotiate a Return to Work Plan
- Explore what to do if an injured or sick worker returning to work feels that they are being treated differently because of their injury or ill health

- Provide an update on equal opportunity law, and how it intersects with other workplace laws and your organisation's policies and procedures

- Explore effective strategies to prevent discrimination, bullying, harassment and sexual harassment
- Provide you with skills and strategies to effectively manage and resolve workplace conflict as simply and as quickly as possible

This workshop will:
- Provide an outline of equal opportunity law, and how it intersects with other workplace laws and your organisation's policies and procedures
- Assist you to define inappropriate workplace behaviour
- Explore the parameters of the Contact Officer role and the knowledge and skills required to fulfil this role effectively
- Explore the steps involved in a complaint handling process and the place of a Contact Officer within this process.
Participants will receive a 70 page resource manual and guide to the role.

- Outline recent changes and directions in equal opportunity law, in particular, the new provisions on family responsibilities and employment activity
- Outline developments in equal opportunity case law and what this might mean for your organisation

Best practice in recruitment and selection
Dates:
- Thursday 6 August, 9.30am to 1pm
This workshop will:
- Ensure you get the best person for the job every time, using equal opportunity principles
- Help you understand what you can include in job ads and how to use recruitment and selection tools, such as pre-employment medical testing and aptitude testing, in a non discriminatory way
- Explore concepts such as psychological profiling and ‘cultural fit' in relation to recruitment and selection
- Explore the concept of ‘inherent requirement of the job'
- Clarify the responsibility of recruitment agencies under equal opportunity law

This workshop will:
- Assist you to understand the principles of effectively investigating workplace complaints, including procedural and substantive fairness, confidentiality and timeliness
- Assist you to understand the steps of an effective investigation process
- Provide you with the opportunity to practice the skills required in conducting investigations
- Examine the considerations involved in making findings and recommendations following an investigation

- Outline when and how mediation can be used in the resolution of workplace complaints

This workshop is specifically for local government.
This workshop will:
- Provide an introduction to key human rights concepts and the operation of the Charter
- Outline the obligations of local government as public authorities
- Identify strategies to integrate human rights into the culture, values and leadership of your organisation
- Examine legal and non-legal advocacy opportunities contained within the Charter
Prerequisites: Participants will receive a 57 page Human Rights implementation resource and a 34 page guide to civil and political rights.
