Step in the right direction

02/06/2009

I was heartened to learn of Premier John Brumby's plan to personally lead a community walk to promote social tolerance and harmony.

The walk, from Carlton Gardens to Federation Square on Sunday 12 July, will allow the people of Victoria to express support for all their fellow Victorians, no matter what their race, religion, sexuality or disability.

This move follows the government's announcement to give magistrates and judges discretion to increase sentencing in cases of prejudice related crime.

These initiatives are all welcome. However, they must be underpinned by comprehensive, sustained and heartfelt community support to stand up to racism and all forms of discrimination. The planned harmony walk on 12 July is a step in the right direction.

Staff from the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission will be there, and we urge our fellow Victorians to join us.
