Commission acknowledges police Chief's achievements

07/11/2008

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission acknowledges the achievements of Ms Christine Nixon as Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police

“Since making history in April 2001, when she became Australia's first female police commissioner, Ms Nixon has driven reform in many areas,” said Dr Helen Szoke, Chief Executive Officer of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

“By implementing the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities as a priority for Victoria Police, she has ensured that the principles of the Charter are considered at the coalface of operational police work.”

“Ms Nixon has promoted equality in one of the most culturally challenging organisations and changed the profile of the Victoria Police to better reflect the community it serves – with more women, older members and people from culturally diverse backgrounds,” said Ms Szoke.

“She has shown passion and determination in her capacity as the CEO of an organisation of 14,000 members and an annual budget of close to 2 billion dollars.”

Her leadership style, encouraging participation and listening to people, has helped build connections between police and the community, including the Indigenous community.

The community should also acknowledge her efforts and success in tackling particular types of crime, including violence against women, family violence and sexual assault, and making people more comfortable to come forward on these matters.
