New Chair for Human Rights Commission

23/07/2008

Victoria’s anti-discrimination and human rights watchdog, the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission, today welcomed Michael Gorton as its new chairperson.

A principal of Russell Kennedy Solicitors, Mr Gorton has practiced in the areas of contract and commercial law, health law and industrial employment law, and is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Infertility Treatment Authority (Victoria).

His previous appointments include the roles of Chairman of the Victorian Biotechnology Ethics Advisory Committee, President of the Health Services Review Council, appointed by the Victorian Government, the inaugural co-chair of Reconciliation Victoria, and president of the Victoria division of the United Nations Association of Australia

"The Commission has had a longstanding relationship with Mr Gorton who was a Commission member from 1995 to 1999," said Dr Helen Szoke, Chief Conciliator/Chief Executive of the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission.

"Mr Gorton brings to the Commission extensive experience that encompasses legal expertise in areas of ethics, health, industrial relations and social justice – which will be a profound benefit to us as we move into our next stage of growth and development."

With effect from today, Mr Gorton replaces outgoing Chair, Fiona Smith.

"Fiona has made a tremendous contribution over the past four and half years, presiding over great change, both internal and external, growth and development," said Dr Szoke.

"The Commission has greatly benefited from her intelligence and vision, her passion and commitment, and we wish her well for the future."

The Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission helps people resolve complaints of discrimination, sexual harassment and racial or religious vilification by offering a confidential, free and impartial complaint resolution service with the aim of achieving a mutual agreement.

Services provided by the Commission include a free telephone Advice Line and the provision of education, training and consultancy services.

The Commission also has specific reporting functions under the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities.
